Website Template or Custom Build? An Honest Comparison
Once "we need a website" is decided, almost every project hits the same second question: buy a ready-made template, or commission a custom build? Both sides have their advocates — one calls a template "a waste of time, you'll look like everyone else," the other calls custom development "an unnecessary expense." Neither is fully right, because neither one knows your actual situation.
The real answer isn't in the question itself — it's in how much time you have, how many years the site will carry your sales, and which systems it needs to talk to. This article covers both sides honestly, including the one we don't sell.
When a template is genuinely the right call
Nearly half the web runs on someone else's finished work — W3Techs measures WordPress at 41.2% of all websites it tracks, and most of those run on off-the-shelf themes. That's not a compromise to be embarrassed about; it's often the smart move, in three specific cases:
- You're testing an idea. The product hasn't launched, there's no order flow yet, and what you need is one page that gets someone to say "tell me more." Spending on custom design at this stage is a trap, not an investment.
- It's an event or a seasonal campaign. A conference, a one-off sale, a short landing page — putting real budget into a site that's irrelevant in three months makes no sense.
- The budget is for a test, not a channel. On marketplaces like ThemeForest
In all three cases a template buys you speed, and we won't argue otherwise. The problem isn't the template — it's keeping one for years as your primary sales channel.
The costs a template doesn't show you upfront
The sticker price on a template is low. Turning it into a working business tool is a separate cost, and it usually shows up later.
Four things to check before you commit
- Speed. HTTP Archive's 2024 Web Almanac puts WordPress at a 41% Core Web Vitals pass rate, against a 51% average across all sites. The typical WordPress theme is slower than the median site on the internet — and a slow site loses both search ranking and mobile visitors before it even finishes loading.
- Extra plugins. A contact form, a language switcher, a caching plugin, a security add-on — each is a separate purchase and a separate update cycle. Run several together and they collide, because different teams built them and nobody guarantees they'll get along.
None of this makes a template a bad choice — it's just the line items that don't show up in the "cheap and fast" number.
A template is a fast start, not a long-term strategy — confuse the two and the bill still arrives, just later.
The middle ground: a customized template
Not everything is binary. For some projects a third path makes sense: start from a ready-made template and have the parts that actually drive conversion — navigation, speed, the enquiry form — rebuilt properly. It costs less than a from-scratch design and holds up better than an untouched template. It works on one condition, though: the template's underlying structure has to genuinely fit your project, or the "fix" ends up costing more than building it right the first time.
Why a custom build earns its different price
A site built for your specific business gives you three things a template can't structurally deliver: navigation shaped around your actual customer journey, direct integration with the systems you already run (CRM, payments, inventory, booking), and a technical foundation that doesn't slow down as it ages. On our side, a custom build is priced in the 800–6000+ AZN range — what moves the number isn't page count, it's how many integrations, how many languages, and who writes the content.
That range isn't the right budget for every project. Spending it on a one-page promo site would be its own mistake. But if the site is going to carry your sales for years and needs to bring in new customers every month, the price gap usually pays for itself by the end of year one — because a template's hidden costs (slowness, plugin sprawl, no one to call) keep compounding the whole time.
Which budget makes sense for you
One question cuts through most of the decision: how many years will this site run, and how much revenue does it need to bring in each month?
- Under six months, a one-off campaign — go with a template.
- Years as your main sales or booking channel, traffic already exists, but slowness or a rigid structure is costing you sales — commission a custom build.
- Somewhere in between — say, you've run a template site for a year and want to know where it actually stands — check its real speed first. Our free SEO and speed audit tool shows it in seconds, no guessing required.
The bottom line
A template and a custom build aren't rivals — they're tools for different stages. The mistake is keeping one long past the point it fits. Be honest about which stage you're actually in, and the choice gets a lot simpler.
